Eight types of private jets: which one is right for you?

Very Light Jets

Eclipse 500

The smallest type of private jets, very light jets (VLJ) are cost effective to operate and maintain unlike standard lightweight jets. It is perfect for short-haul flights or up to a maximum of three hours of flight.

Also known as compact lightweight jets, they can be used on shorter runways and fly to areas that are often inaccessible to commercial airlines. These jets can usually accommodate 4 to 7 passengers and carry a fair amount of luggage, but there is no room for a flight attendant

Popular VLJ types include the Embraer Phenom 100, Eclipse 500 and HondaJet HA-420.

Small Lightweight Jets

Hawker 400 XP

With the best seating capacity, small lightweight jets can comfortably accommodate up to 8 people, making them widely popular with business travelers. These aircraft also have a higher average flight range of 1400 to 2500 nautical miles with a top speed of 500 miles per hour. These capabilities make them ideal for two to three hour flights and even for intercontinental routes.

Like their smaller prototypes, small lightweight jets can also access smaller airports and airstrips, giving business travelers more flexibility and freedom to choose less congested airports instead of crowded commercial airports.

While most small lightweight jets do not have room for a flight attendant, они they can be equipped with a toilet, unlike most very light jets. Hawker 400 XP, Cessna Citation CJ2 and Dassault Falcon 10 are some of the most popular aircraft in this class.

Super Light Jets

Gulfstream G100

Super light jets are characterized by an increased fuselage size, as well as greater flight range and comfort compared to the class of small lightweight jets described above. With a more spacious cabin and luggage compartment, super-light jets can accommodate an average of 8 passengers with guaranteed comfort.

Despite their larger size, super light jets can easily use the short runways of private and/or smaller airports, providing travelers looking to escape the crowds at major airports with alternative departure and arrival options.

Famous aircraft from the class of super light jets are the Gulfstream G100 with a capacity of up to 9 people, and the Embraer Phenom 300 with a maximum capacity of up to 11 passengers.

Mid-size Private Jets

Cessna Citation Latitude

Mid-size private jets are the best choice for travelers looking for more payload. With an average range of 2,200 nautical miles – or about five hours of non-stop flight – mid-size jets can easily fly short-haul and long-haul flights, providing transcontinental capacity.

Because these aircraft have a spacious cabin, they are ideal for passengers who want more space and have extra luggage space. Mid-size jets also offer more stylish interiors and can provide maximum comfort and convenience for 5-10 passengers.

Mid-size jets usually have enough room for two pilots, a flight attendant, an onboard kitchen and a toilet, and some may even be fitted with an enclosed shower and pull-out sofas. Equipped with Wi-Fi and a telephone, mid-size jets are ideal for those who prefer to stay connected and productive during the flight.

Mid-size private jets can use smaller airports and are more cost effective to operate than heavy jets. If you are looking for a mid-size private jet for your travels, we recommend considering the Gulfstream 150, Cessna Citation Latitude and Learjet 60.

Super mid-size jets have spacious cabin and enough space for an enclosed toilet and service galley. With improved avionics for quieter operation, super mid-size jets provide greater levels of comfort for travelers while delivering greater speed and range.

The Gulfstream 200, Cessna Citation Sovereign and Bombardier Challenger 350 are the best options in this class.

Heavy Jets

Dassault Falcon 900

Standard heavy jets can easily accommodate two flight attendants for full in-flight service, while still providing more than ample space for recreational activities, private bathrooms and sleeping areas. Flight comfort is also achieved due to the availability of Wi-Fi and a telephone.

These huge private jets also employ high power of up to 9 hours of non-stop flight and a range of up to 4,000 miles. The Bombardier Challenger 605, Gulfstream 450 and Dassault Falcon 900 are just a few of the top models in this class.
